From Corporate Quotas to Client-Focused: Why Independence Matters

From Corporate Quotas to Client-Focused: Why Independence Matters

July 17, 2025

Six years ago, I made a leap that genuinely scared me. I left the security of the corporate world to launch my own independent practice. It was a risky move, but driven by a simple belief: clients deserve better.

Better transparency. More personalized advice. More time spent listening, and less time chasing quotas. That belief led me to build Good Life Financial Advisors of West Virginia, and it's what drives me every day.

Why I Left the Corporate Financial World

My career started in corporate financial services, where I was expected to follow a top-down model that prioritized production over people. I quickly realized this approach didn't align with my values. I didn't want to sell products, I wanted to serve people.

The problem? Serving clients the way they deserved wasn't possible within that model. I wanted the freedom to build long-term relationships, to craft strategies based on each client's unique goals, and to explain exactly why we were making specific recommendations. That kind of personalized, fiduciary approach wasn't encouraged in a system focused on metrics rather than meaningful relationships.

So I made the move to independence.

What Financial Independence Means for My Clients

Independence doesn't mean doing it alone. Thanks to the support of Good Life Companies and the infrastructure provided by LPL Financial, I've built a practice where I can focus entirely on my clients while a team of experts handles everything else behind the scenes.

This supported independence model allows me to:

  • Offer transparent pricing and fully customized strategies
  • Focus on client education, so you always understand the reasoning behind your portfolio
  • Prioritize your goals, not corporate agendas
  • Be present for my family and community, which makes me a better advisor, husband, coach, and neighbor

A Fiduciary Approach That's Personal

As a fiduciary, my role is straightforward: always act in your best interest. That may sound obvious, but in the financial world, it's not always the standard.

For me, this role isn't just professional, it's personal. I work with hardworking families, business owners, and public employees across West Virginia. Many of them are people I know and coach alongside, families I see at the ballfields, and neighbors I've grown up with. These aren't just clients, they're part of my community.

That's why every plan I create is grounded in education, honesty, and alignment with your long-term objectives. Few things excite me more than sitting down with a client and creating a retirement plan or managing a pension to ensure we're supporting the needs of the plan participants. At Good Life Financial Advisors of West Virginia, you'll never be left guessing about your financial future. You'll know what we're doing, why we're doing it, and how it fits into the bigger picture of your life.

What's Next for Good Life Financial Advisors

As my practice continues to grow, I'm focused on building a team of like-minded, values-driven advisors across West Virginia. I believe there's a better way to serve clients, and it starts by putting people before production. By staying true to that mission, we can help more families build confident financial futures without sacrificing transparency, balance, or trust.
