"Buy the Watch": Why Your Financial Plan Should Include Your Dreams

July 17, 2025

One of the best parts of being a financial advisor is helping people achieve their goals, not just the ones on spreadsheets, but the personal ones that really matter.

Yes, investing is a key part of what we do. Yes, we talk about Roth conversions, retirement timelines, and estate planning. But at the heart of it all is something much more human: helping people live the life they’ve worked hard to create.

Let me tell you a story I often share with clients. It’s about a retired police officer who became not just a client, but a friend, and it’s a perfect example of why financial planning is about more than saving money.

The Story of the Watch

This friend had transferred an account to me, and we got to work laying out a financial plan. We checked the boxes, hit our goals faster than expected, and he eventually stepped into a “retirement job” to keep saving and building.

But along the way, he got a call from his watch dealer. They had the watch in stock, a Rolex that was the same model his grandfather wore. His grandpa, a man who valued reliability over status, had worn it to work every day. For my friend, it wasn’t just a watch. It was a connection to someone he loved and admired.

He called me, excited but hesitant. He’d come up with a plan to make extra contributions and earn his way into buying the watch.

What he didn’t expect was what I told him next.

"Buy the Watch."

I asked him, “Do you have the money right now to buy it?”

He said yes, but he was unsure if it was responsible to spend that much.

So I said, “Buy the watch. You’ve earned it. We’ve already met your goals, and you're in a great position.”

Because that’s the thing: Financial planning shouldn’t just be about always about investing. Sometimes, when the math works, it’s okay to enjoy the reward.

It’s About More Than Money

This is what I believe: A good plan is one that not only helps you grow your wealth, but gives you the freedom to use it in ways that are meaningful.

That’s why I work closely with my clients. not just to optimize investments, but to understand their lives, their stories, their dreams. Whether it’s buying a lake house, taking the grandkids to Disney, or owning a meaningful timepiece that connects you to your roots… if you’ve done the work, and the plan says you can, then you should.

What Are You Waiting For?

Do you have a goal or a dream you’ve put on hold, thinking it might not be realistic? Maybe it’s closer than you think. When we sit down together, we’re not just talking about retirement accounts. We’re talking about your life.

You deserve a financial advisor who puts your goals first—and helps you know when it’s time to go after them.

So, what’s your version of the watch?

Let’s build a plan that helps you get there—and reminds you when it’s time to enjoy it.
